A ride through the Gialova lagoon
The lagoon
The lagoon serves as
a wildlife habitat, particularly for migratory birds, which stop here first on
their way from Africa to Northern Europe. A multitude of mammals, reptiles,
amphibians and fish live there. Prominent among them is the African Chamelaeon,
which is threatened by extinction. For the best view of the beach with the adjoining
lagoon climb to the Old Navarino Castle (Palaiokastro) perched on the cliff on
the left side of the beach. The path to the castle is steep and narrow but it
doesn’t take long to reach the top and the views are truly breathtaking.
Cycling is the best way to explore the neighboring lagoon, there is a network
of dirt roads crisscrossing the area with few hides along the way for the bird
watching enthusiasts. Watching the sun setting to the still waters of the swamp
accompanied by the croaking of thousands of frogs is beautiful but make sure
you leave soon after or you will have to brave the vicious attack of many
bloodthirsty mosquitos.
Waterfalls
The trip to the
waterfall starts from the village of Gialova following the signs for Kalamaris
waterfall. After about a kilometer turn to the right on a dirt road, again
marked by a sign. From here, drive through the orchards covering the bottom of
the valley until a sign indicating a car park. Don’t expect much of a car park
though, it’s just a clearing among few olive trees.
From here a narrow
path merges to the jungle for the next 15 minutes until reaching the waterfall.
There is a small pool at the bottom of the waterfall for a refreshing splash
and the rock just under the waterfall makes a great photo spot.
The whole trip from
Gialova to the Kalamari waterfall can be easily and comfortably done on foot,
too. It has around 3 km each way and passes mostly through the evergreen olive
orchards so typical for this part of Greece. It would make for a pleasant
afternoon hike after a day of lounging on one of the beautiful beaches around
Gialova.
